Working with movies

Picture
Movies get more and more demanding that’s why it is logical that teachers are now using this medium more often. The amount of teachers who are using movies in their classrooms is still low but it is rising rapidly. Movies are audiovisual and can train cognitive abilities especially in foreign language classes they qualify to improve the understanding and the pronunciation of a foreign langue. Because of film clips or movies it is able to transport native speakers right into the classroom. Of course students will enjoy watching movies which is also an important point.

The problem why movies in the classroom are proscribed is that many teachers don’t know how to work with them productively and useful. It is also important to provide appropriate material for the right age that means it is difficult to know which movie too complex or not enough complex for the specific age. The film pedagogic recommend the use of pre-, while- and post-viewing-activities, so that the students can work reasonable with the movie and they have a learning target. I created such activities for the movie “The Edge” for another project to show how such activities could look alike. The students will get those on a worksheet or via a powerpoint presentation. You can choose between three methods, to show the whole film, just parts of it or to show the whole film in parts. I decided to use the second method.

Part1: Pre-Viewing-Activity

  • Chaptre 22: The Last Journey
  • What could be Charles Morse’s last words in this Clip?

Part 2: While-Viewing-Activity

  • Chaptre 2: Knowledge is Power
  • Chaptre 3: Nightly Snack
  • Describe the landscape and how it affects the mood of the movie. In which part of the world could it play?
  • What is Mickey Morse’s gift to her husband? How seem the protagonists in this scene? What kind of role could this gift have in the movie?
  • What kind of gift is Robert Green giving to Charles Morse? What kind of imagery could this gift have in the movie?

Part 3: Post-Viewing-Activity

  • Chaptre 4: Development of a Vision
  • Chaptre 5: Walk on the Wildside
  • How appears the relationship between Charles Morse and his wife and between Charles Morse’s wife and Robert Greene?
  • Issue a characterization of Charles Morse and Robert Greene. Compare them with each other.
  • How could the movie go on at this point?
