Cyberwar
Knowing now all the advantages and
positive sides of new media and would it now be interesting and important to get
information about the negative sides, so to speak the dangerous sides of new
media.
Most of the people know the dangers of the internet, problems like the loss of privacy, cyber-bulling, paedophilia in chat rooms and violent material. But hardly anybody knows the meaning of “cyberwar”, which is the biggest danger of the internet and the cyberworld and an important word that will play bigger role in the future.
The word sounds really futuristic and overdrawn, but it is a fact and a serious threat for every industrialized country. It describes a digital war against the background of the fact that nearly everything important in our daily lives is digitally connected, starting with electricity, heating, cooking and going on with communication, saved information, connection to the outer world and also the whole traffic system. Like this you could go on for hours. One of the largest risk is that people of all shades, terrorists, foreign countries, commercial enterprises, a normal person and even the own state could hack these systems and control them and take hold of the information or change them or erase them and so on. Also communication messages could be changed or cut off for example.
The movie Die Hard 4 with Bruce Willis, in which Washington D.C. is left in chaos by a terrorist group of super hackers wouldn’t be a good example to define “cyberwar”, because this is just an exaggerated scenario, but there are actual examples that “cyberwar” is a serious threat. An actual example would be the civil commotions in Egypt. The Egyptian government deactivated the internet and the cell coverage so that the people couldn’t communicate anymore and plan new riots against the government. There are also many spying attacks on governmental databases that were confirmed by the American government.
Another example would be the censorship of the Chinese internet which means that the chinese people are not able to take hold of all the news and the material in the internet. As you see the word “cyberwar” also implicates the change of news material in order to use it for propaganda purposes. We get all our information about wars, conflicts and crisis area through the new media and footage like film clips can be easily changed to manipulate the people and give them misinformation. It is also proved that the USA did this in the war in Iraq and also in other wars.
Panicmongering is not advisable but “cyberwar” is taken seriously because also Barack Obama constituted in 2010 a cybercommand of 3000 people.
